Nothing Exists Alone

There is no shortage of people who can visualize something beautiful, come up with a compelling idea, or optimize a decision against the numbers.

Those things matter. But none of them, on their own, are enough to create something that thrives in the real world.

For me, the value of design lies in bringing different perspectives together to make something meaningful for the person, viable for the business, and coherent within the system around it.

01 ⦵ People come first

As a designer, I have a responsibility to understand and represent the people who will ultimately experience what we make.

Their needs, behaviors, frustrations, and aspirations should be part of the conversation from the beginning, not something validated at the end.

02 ⦵ Business matters too

Advocating for people doesn't mean working against the business.

A solution has to be meaningful to the person and viable for the organization behind it. I’m interested in finding where those interests can support one another rather than forcing one to compromise for the other.

03 ⦵ Perspective Changes the Problem

The best answer rarely comes from looking at something from only one angle.

It's important to step back and appreciate the bigger picture which means understanding the person, the business, the market, the constraints, and the forces intertwining them.

04 ⦵ Connections Create Opportunity

Products, services, brands, and businesses don't operate independently.

I’m drawn to the relationships between them, and to the opportunities that become visible when you consider things that are usually operated separately.

05 ⦵ What Emerges

When different perspectives begin to reinforce one another, something new becomes possible.

Better experiences strengthen relationships. Stronger relationships create trust and demand. Those relationships create value for the business, which creates new opportunities to improve the experience.

Nothing exists alone. The opportunity lies in the relationship between them.
